Is Freebuff legit?

Who makes Freebuff, how it can be free, what it does with your code, and how to check all of it yourself.

In short

  • Yes. Freebuff is run by Freebuff, Inc., the team behind Codebuff, and is backed by Y Combinator.
  • It is free because ads pay for it. Ads are labeled "Sponsored". Paid plans exist if you want more, but you never need a card to start.
  • The CLI, agents and SDK are open source under the Apache-2.0 license on GitHub.
  • Desktop installers are code-signed: macOS builds are signed and notarized by Apple, and Windows builds carry an Authenticode signature.
  • We may ask you to verify a phone number, and sometimes your identity, to keep free access to one account per person.

Who makes Freebuff

Freebuff is operated by Freebuff, Inc. It is built by the team behind Codebuff, a coding agent company backed by Y Combinator. Co-founder James Grugett previously co-founded Manifold Markets. You can read posts from the team on the Freebuff blog.

How Freebuff can be free

Advertisers pay for it. Freebuff shows ads inside the app, labeled "Sponsored". Some agent suggestions are sponsored too: they name the sponsor, carry the same label, and only run if you click Accept.

Free usage is measured in hours. Each session lasts an hour with unlimited messages, and a free account gets a daily allowance that depends on your country. Paid plans add more hours and models. Payments go through our payment processor, so we never store your full card number. The longer version is in how Freebuff is free.

What Freebuff does with your code and prompts

Does Freebuff collect my data? Freebuff collects prompts, messages, code, files, repository data, and agent traces when you use features that need them. Depending on the model or feature, AI model providers may also process that data. See the Privacy Policy for the uses and limits that apply.

Is my data used to train AI? Only when a model or feature says data may be used for AI training. Freebuff or the provider may then keep submissions to develop, train, test, evaluate, fine-tune, and improve AI models or products, and Freebuff may share or sell them to third parties. Separately, Freebuff may use your data to train the models that choose and measure ads.

How is my data used and stored? Freebuff uses your messages, agent traces, and files to run the service and respond to your requests. We may analyze this data, and how you use the app, to personalize ads and train ad models. We do not give separately uploaded files, project files, or connected repositories to advertising providers. Restricted partners may evaluate repositories you connect to Freebuff Cloud, but cannot otherwise use, broadly share, or train on them. See the Privacy Policy for details.

Does Freebuff read files outside my project? No, with a few exceptions, such as files an agent reads in the conversation, files you share, and settings like your agent instructions and skills. See the Privacy Policy for details.

Why Freebuff may ask you to verify

Every free account costs us real money in AI usage, so people who create many accounts would end the free tier for everyone. To keep free access to one account per person, we may ask you to verify a phone number by text message. When you sign up on the website, a device-identification service checks for duplicate and automated accounts. If an account shows signs of abuse, or shares a device with another account, we may ask you to verify your identity through our processor Didit, with your consent.

We know this can feel intrusive for a free product. It is how the free tier stays free. The privacy policy explains what each check collects and how long it is kept.

How to check us yourself

  • Get Freebuff from the source. Download it from freebuff.com, or install the CLI with npm install -g freebuff.
  • Read the code. The CLI, agents and SDK are on GitHub under the Apache-2.0 license.
  • Check the installer’s signature. On a Mac, the app opens without an unidentified-developer warning because Apple has notarized it. On Windows, the installer’s Digital Signatures tab shows a verified publisher.
  • See whether it is up. The status page shows the state of Freebuff, its API and its models.
  • Report a security issue to support@freebuff.com. Our security.txt lists the same contact.
  • Leave whenever you want. You can delete your account at any time.

What users and reviewers say

We collected notes from users in Freebuff reviews: what developers say after switching. For an outside view, independent reviews such as Developers Digest’s walk through what the ads and data policy cost you in exchange for free access. We think that trade should be made with open eyes.

Questions

Is Freebuff legit?
Yes. Freebuff is operated by Freebuff, Inc., built by the team behind Codebuff and backed by Y Combinator. Its CLI, agents and SDK are open source on GitHub, and its desktop installers are code-signed.
Is Freebuff a scam?
No. Freebuff is a free coding agent funded by ads. You do not need a card to use it, and paid plans are optional. If a site asks you to pay for "Freebuff access" outside freebuff.com, it is not us.
Is Freebuff really free?
Yes. Ads pay for it. Free usage is measured in hours: each session lasts an hour with unlimited messages, and your daily allowance depends on your country. Paid plans add more hours and models.
Is the Freebuff desktop app safe to install?
Download it from freebuff.com. macOS builds are signed and notarized by Apple, and Windows builds carry an Authenticode signature. Like any coding agent, it can read files and run commands in the projects you open, so use it on code you are comfortable sharing with AI model providers.
Why does Freebuff ask for my phone number?
To keep free access to one account per person. Free accounts cost real money in AI usage, so mass sign-ups would end the free tier. We may also ask some accounts to verify their identity.
Who owns Freebuff?
