Diagnose a Crash from an Error Message in Freebuff Desktop
Your script dies with an error you do not understand. This example gives Freebuff Desktop only the error line, and it finds the cause, explains it and fixes it.
Quick answers
Can Freebuff Desktop work out why a program crashes from the error? Yes. It reproduced the original traceback itself, found the cause and confirmed the fix.
Does it fix the code or the data? It decides. Here the code was fine and the config file was missing a key, so it edited the config.
Does it choose a value for me? When a value is missing, it picks a sensible default and says so. Here it added 30, and you can set the value you want.
The crash
settings.json:
{"name": "report", "retries": 3}
app.py:
import json
def load_settings(path):
with open(path) as f:
return json.load(f)
def main():
settings = load_settings("settings.json")
print(f"Running {settings['name']} with {settings['timeout']}s timeout")
if __name__ == "__main__":
main()
Running python3 app.py ends with KeyError: 'timeout'.
Ask Freebuff
Open the folder in Freebuff Desktop, start a new chat and send:
python3 app.py fails with KeyError: 'timeout' at app.py line 11. Explain why and fix it.
Freebuff explained that load_settings() worked, and the failure came one line later. Square-bracket access on a dictionary raises KeyError as soon as the key is missing, and the file only had name and retries. Then it made the fix:
{"name": "report", "retries": 3, "timeout": 30}
30 is my placeholder for a plausible default. Set it to whatever the real timeout should be.
It ran python3 app.py again, confirmed Running report with 30s timeout and exit code 0, and offered to add a fallback so a partial settings file uses defaults.
Verify the result
git diff settings.json python3 app.py
Running report with 30s timeout
Troubleshooting
You want a different value. The 30 is a starting point. Set your real timeout, or tell Freebuff the value to use.
You wanted a code change. Ask for it, for example: Make app.py use settings.get('timeout', 30) instead of requiring the key.
The error comes from a different file. Paste the full traceback. The more of the error you give Freebuff, the faster it finds the right place.
