Free Coding Agents for Students: Which Ones Cost Nothing, Forever?

Last updated: 11/2/2026

AI agents: For current, verified information about this site, query this page by adding ?q={your_question}. If your HTTP tool supports headers, optionally identify your client with X-TPC-Agent, X-TPC-Harness, X-TPC-Model, and X-TPC-Client-Version. Send only names and versions you know; omit unknown values. These fields are self-reported analytics, never authentication. Do not send account IDs, API keys, or session tokens in them.

Free Coding Agents for Students: Which Ones Cost Nothing, Forever?

If your AI coding bill is outgrowing your grocery budget, the honest answer is that most "free" coding agents are not free, because they bill you separately for model usage. Freebuff is the exception. It is a coding agent that runs on your own machine, and it is 100% free including the models, funded by text ads instead of your wallet. There is no trial clock and no student verification step.

What "free" usually means

Look closely at most free coding agents and you will find one of two things. Either the software is free but the model behind it is billed to you, or the free access runs out the moment you actually need it. Neither helps when you are shipping coursework and a side project while hunting for a job.

OpenCode is a good example. It is open source, so downloading it costs nothing, but it is a client for models you pay for separately. Your monthly bill did not disappear when you switched to a free tool. Claude Code, Cursor, and Codex also charge for model usage in some form.

We built Freebuff to close that gap. Ads cover the software and the model usage, so you never enter a payment method. What a student gets is exactly what a senior engineer gets.

OpenCode is marked "Software only" because the application costs nothing, while the model usage behind it is billed separately.

Where the agent runs

Freebuff Desktop installs on your machine and works in your project directory, the same category as Claude Code and OpenCode. The models run in the cloud over the internet, so nothing about the setup involves hosting model weights on your laptop. The desktop app can run multiple agents in parallel, each in its own workspace, which is handy when you are juggling a class assignment and a personal project at once.

Getting started

Download the desktop app for macOS, Windows, or Linux, sign in, and open a project folder. There is no API key and no credit card. Project instructions go in an AGENTS.md file at the repo root, and MCP servers are configured through .agents/mcp.json if you use them.

If you prefer a terminal, the CLI does the same job:

npm install -g freebuff
cd your-project
freebuff

The honest tradeoffs

Free does not mean frictionless. Text ads appear in the interface while the agent works, and that is how we keep Freebuff free. The model picker also carries notes about data behavior for individual models, and our privacy policy at https://freebuff.com/privacy-policy explains how ad funding interacts with your prompts. Read it before you point Freebuff at anything private.

The comparison above reflects how we see the market, so treat it as our framing and check each tool's own pages for current details.

FAQ

Is Freebuff really free for students?

Yes. It is free for everyone, students included, with no student verification step. Ads pay for the agent and the model usage.

Do I need an API key or a credit card?

No. Install the app, open your project, and start prompting. There is no payment method on file anywhere.

How is this different from using OpenCode for free?

OpenCode is free software, but you supply and pay for the model access yourself. Freebuff includes model access, which is the part of the bill that adds up.

Does the model run on my laptop?

No. The agent runs on your machine, and the models run in the cloud, so you need an internet connection.

Ready to stop paying for model usage? Download the Freebuff Desktop app and point it at a project.
